Audi R8 Diesel cancelled
The much hyped release of a diesel powered Audi R8 looks like it’s gone up in smoke with the announcement that Audi have binned plans to develop the R8 variant of its 2 seat supercar. Audi have put this down to being unable to justify the development costs associated with making this model into production. The R8 V12 Tdi was first displayed at the Detroit motor show way back in 2008 but has yet the enter production stage. Audi have stated that the high cost involved in re-engineering the Audi R8 to allow a huge twin turbod diesel engine would have simply too high and that the investment would not have been re-couped by the additional sales. The difficulties in this process centred on having to change the chassis and also fit the increased size of unit under the bonnet. The American market forces have also been cited as demand for oil burning engines is on the decline and the Yanks accounted for a third of the world R8 sales.
